Who we are

The Trinidad Transport Board is an advisory body that consists of Presidential appointees established in accordance with Section 3, Ch.48:50, of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act (MVRTA). The Board is composed of key representatives including the Chief Technical Officer as Chairman, the Commissioner of Police (or a designated senior officer), the Licensing Authority, the Chairman of the Road Safety Association, a member of the Automobile Association, and seven additional members appointed by the President to represent local government, commerce, industry, agriculture, and labour.
 
  • A Special Truck is defined as a vehicle with a Maximum Gross Weight (MGW) greater than 15,000 kg and a length exceeding 9 metres.

 

  • A Special Trailer is defined as a vehicle with a Maximum Gross Weight (MGW) greater than 8,000 kg (8,001 kg or more) and a length exceeding 7 metres.
PLEASE NOTE:

a.    The Ministry strongly advised that applicants receive their approval to register and operate from the Transport Board before importing their Units as the Board is not obliged to grant approval for Units already imported.
 
b.    Approval is also required for the importation of used trucks and trailers.

Transport Grievance Redress
In accordance with the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act Chapter 48:50 Section 3 (3), the Board shall hear and determine any appeal submitted by any aggrieved person against any order or decision of the Licensing Authority or of an Automotive Licensing Officer, and the Board's decision shall be final and conclusive. The MVRT Act 48:50 Section 3 (4) also states that the Board shall perform such other duties as are assigned by this Act and the regulations made hereunder or by any Order of the President.

Our Role

In accordance with the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act Chapter 48:50, the key responsibilities of the Transport Board is for:
  • Issuing Certificate of Approval to import, register and operate new or used special trucks and trailers.
  • Issuing Certificate of Approval to transfer and operate special trucks and trailers.
  • Address appeals made by aggrieved persons made against the licensing authority.
  • The construction and maintenance of roads and the cost thereof.
